If you want to own a campervan, you have to learn about the mechanical operation of it. That's what I have learned since May when I first bought the beautiful big Blue of a beast that is my pride and joy.
In an effort to practice what I preach, I searched around for a 'man and a van' for a wholly different reason - to teach me how to put it back together again should it fail me. I found one, in Gloucestershire. He's a new kid on the block and is setting up in business teaching the ladies how to look after their vans when they're on the road alone.
Well, my camper passed it's MOT. Yeah, but... the certificate had an advisory on it that persisted to agitate my mind.
The steering wheel rack/gaitor was damaged!
Being the trusty person I am, I searched around for a man who could help get it fixed. I put the word out among friends and family for someone who might be able to get it done for me, in time for my Christams Adventure.
Luckily, for me, one kind, good and generous friend recommended a man to me. I had to travel 10 miles to get there, but that was closer than I was expecting!
He took the camper into his garage, on a farm, in the middle of no-where (bit creepy and I wouldn't recommend going there alone at night). And he gave me a lift back while he set to work on the job.
Surprisingly, it was done in no time at all
He picked me up, took me the ten miles to his garage, and I drove it back. Happy, even if i was five hundred smackers short. It was done, I could look forward to the trip I was planning with no problems on the horizon. Until I reversed it into my parking spot.
The steering wheel shuddered and some kind of horrible screeching noise came out of nowhere.
After having returned it to the garage, another ten mile trip, the mechanic said that the steering wheel rack was cracked and leaking.
Oh my goodness gracious me!
Luckily, he said he would have it done by Monday and I could get on with my plans.
All the best,
