WELLBEING: 03 - Get to know your needs

Wants and needs are different things entirely. When you want something it's because you desire it - you could do without it, but it would enrich your life because it would make you happy.

Needs, though, are something that keeps your body, spirit and emotions balanced. When you have food in your belly, clothes on your back, and a roof over your head you go some way to satisfying those wants.

But what about the emotional needs?

When you don't get your emotional needs met, you find yourself facing something akin to stressful situations. The basic emotional needs you need a sense of, are as follows:

  • Security

  • Attention

  • Control

  • Status

  • Achievement

  • Community

  • Privacy

  • Relationships

  • Connection

  • Competence

  • Purpose

How many of these do you believe are satisfied in your life? It has been found, if we have several of them met we feel that we're doing ok. However, if many of them are not met, we begin to sense there's something missing - and that, more-or-less, is when emotional distress begins to take hold.

Emotional distress can be expressed in emotions such as depression, anxiety, addictions, anger, to name a few. Each of these is explored in my books which you are free to view here:
